The Beauty of One: Oil Painting Single Objects

Course Description

In this course, you will create a small series of paintings focusing on single objects. This series can be developed with either palette knife or brushes. We will focus on traditional techniques for toning the painting surface and sketching out the composition in paint. Options for developing the painting are open. An Alla Prima or “direct painting,” wet-in-wet, or “indirect painting” methods of doing an underpainting with color on top are acceptable.

 

Supplies

  • Access to the internet and a printer, unless you will work off your computer or tablet

  • Paints—Double Primary Palette with white, black, and a neutral; use professional-quality paints… Gamblin is a great brand available at Michael’s

- Alizarin Crimson

- Cadmium Red

- Cadmium Yellow

- Yellow Ochre

- Lemon yellow

- Ultramarine Blue

- Cobalt Blue

- Ivory Black

- Titanium White

- Burnt Sienna

- Raw Sienna

- Burnt Umber

  • Brushes—Probably a #6 or #8 made in the USA

- Flat and Filbert: about 1/2” wide with ferules about 1” long

- Round: 1/4” wide and ferules to 1” long

   OR

- A good oil brush set that includes rounds, flats, and filberts

  • Other supplies

- 3 or 4 Gessoed panels, canvas boards, stretched (primed) canvases or canvas paper -- 9”x12” or larger

- Small mixed-media sketch book for value and color studies

- Table easel -- we will supply if you don’t have one

- Board on which to tape canvas paper, if you are using that surface

- Paper towels

- Metal off-set palette knife

- 2B pencil

- Pencil sharpener

- Vinyl eraser

- Toned palette, glass or disposable

- Small container of odorless mineral spirits, such as Gamsol, and a small glass container with lid

- The Masters Brush cleaner and preserver

- Small container of refined linseed oil

- Gamblin solvent-free fluid medium or gel medium

About Your Instructor: Roxanna (Roxy) Tuff

Roxy is a metalsmith and illustrator who holds a BFA in Painting and Drawing and MFA in Painting. She is an outstanding instructor, having taught in the art studio area at Texas State for 14 years. Over LLL-smtx's 10 year-history, Roxy has taught the most courses.
