Join Us for a Bus Tour of
Four Painted Churches in Schulenburg
Texas Historian Dr. Frank de la Teja will be our expert tour guide
Tuesday, Dec. 1 – Depart at 8:00am, Return at 4:00pm
We need at least 20 participants, so please register today!
The Painted Churches of Texas are historic 19th- and early 20th-Century religious sanctuaries built by German and Czech immigrants in the rural Texas Hill Country and surrounding plains. While quite unassuming on the outside, their interiors feature elaborate hand-painted stenciling, vaulted blue ceilings, faux-marble columns, and intricate religious murals.
We are pleased that Dr. Frank de la Teja will be with us to provide historical context during our tour. Dr. de la Teja is a distinguished historian and Professor Emeritus of History at Texas State University. His scholarship focuses on the Spanish, Mexican, and Republic of Texas periods with particular emphasis on the people, communities, and political forces that shaped Texas. Dr. de la Teja was selected as the inaugural Texas State Historian in 2007 and also served as president of the Texas State Historical Association from 2007-2008.
During the ride to Schulenburg, Dr. de la Teja will offer a “crash course” in Catholicism to help us better appreciate the religious symbolism, artistry, and traditions reflected in the churches we will visit. These are: St. Mary's Church of the Assumption, Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, St. John the Baptist Czech Catholic Church, and Nativity of Mary, Blessed Virgin Catholic Church.
