LLL-smtx Spotlight -- Sue Beebe

In 2014, Marianne Reese’s announcement of her idea for an ongoing series of classes and lectures for San Marcos-area adult learners, Becky D. Reese’s inaugural art history course, and her retirement from teaching were perfectly synced for Sue. Having hoped to find a way to return to the classroom as a student, Sue was hooked on LifeLong Learning!

In addition to being an enthusiastic LifeLong Learning participant from its inception, Sue has served on the LifeLong Learning Advisory Council since it was formed in 2017 and has been the secretary from that time to the present. During the summer of 2024, Sue chaired an Ad Hoc Planning Committee charged with charting a course for the future of LifeLong Learning as it enters its second decade.

Sue spent her professional career teaching English and communication courses at the secondary and university levels. She taught in the Department of English at Texas State for 26 years and served as Director of Lower-Division Studies in English for 11 years before her retirement. While at Texas State, Sue received the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Teaching and in Service, and the College of Liberal Arts Awards for Excellence in Scholarly/Creative Activities, in Teaching, and in Service. Sue and her husband Steve, a LifeLong Learning instructor and supporter, continue to co-author five college-level communication textbooks.

In addition to LifeLong Learning, Sue has been involved in other education-related projects in the San Marcos community. She was the founding coordinator of the San Marcos Volunteers in Public Schools Program and served on the San Marcos School Board and the Education Foundation Board. In 1993, she was named the statewide Friend of Education by the Texas Classroom Teachers’ Association, and in 2000, the San Marcos school district presented her with its Lifetime Achievement Award.
